AT&T Giveth and AT&T Taketh Away

For a moment there, I thought I was high. For those of you who know I recently received an iPhone and discovered the world of Twitter, you'll know last week I was thrilled that my local SBUX had free wireless for iPhone users. As a coffee addict who always feels the need to connect, I can't tell you how awesome the moment of discovery was. The first thing I did was twitter it. But then, a few days later *poof* the connection was gone, never to be found again.

Just today, my friend Lecter explained why:

AT&T's iPhone website (under 'Plans' tab) has been updated to reveal that each iPhone plan now includes access to their "more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including Starbucks all for use in the U.S."

It was first revealed last week that AT&T had quietly begun offering iPhone users access to their Wi-Fi hotspots for free (including Starbucks and Barnes & Noble).

No official announcement had been made, however, and the service was abruptly turned off a few days later. AT&T has remained quiet about this new offering, but it's clear they will be officially delivering this service shortly.
Well, that' s just dandy. So the question in my mind (as I slap my phone, looking for a vein --- I mean node) is when? I want more connectivity, fuckers!

UPDATE: 05/09/2008 - PSYCH!!!!! AT&T is an indian giver. Why do they have a monopoly on the world's greatest cellphone?

UPDATE: 05/12/2008 - AT&T continues to wig out. From Engadget comes this report. My favorite line in the piece: "Great news, we're offering free WiFi to iPhone users! Wait, no we're not. Yes we are! Oh, no, wait, cancel that." It's like I'm watching an episode of Seinfeld (on my iPhone @ SBUX...um...no....like...like...like I don't know!).
